About EasyJet

EasyJet is a British low-cost airline operating primarily in the UK and the EU. It was founded in 1995 by Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, a Greek Cypriot. The airline is part of a bigger entity called EasyGroup, which includes also brands like the car rental company EasyCar, a budget hotel chain EasyHotel, a gym chain EasyGym, and more.

With nearly 30 bases across Europe, EasyJet operates approximately 1000 routes between over 150 airports in 35 countries. Besides destinations in the UK and Europe, the airline also flies to popular holiday destinations such as Tunisia, Morocco, and Israel.

Your air passenger rights in the event of a cancelled or delayed EasyJet flight

There are two laws that you should take into consideration when you want to claim a refund or compensation for a cancelled or delayed EasyJet flight. The first one is the European Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004; the second is the post-Brexit British adaptation of the former, ‘The Air Passenger Rights and Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019’.

How do these two regulations protect your rights in the event of a delayed or cancelled EasyJet flight?

  • Did you experience a delayed EasyJet flight? If your EasyJet flight was delayed by at least 3 hours, you are most likely entitled to flight compensation.

  • Was your EasyJet flight cancelled? If you did not take an alternative flight, you are entitled to a full monetary refund. You might also be eligible for additional EasyJet compensation if your flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days before the departure date.

Delayed EasyJet flight — get compensation

If your EasyJet flight was delayed by at least 3 hours, you are most likely entitled to compensation. Its value depends on the distance of your flight — the further you fly, the higher your compensation.

  • For all flights of fewer than 1,500 km, the compensation is £220.

  • For all flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, the compensation is £350.

  • For all flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU, the compensation is also £350.

  • For all flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU, the compensation is £520 — however, if your flight was delayed by fewer than 4 hours, the total amount might be reduced by 50%.

Cancelled EasyJet flight — get refund and compensation

Did you experience an EasyJet flight cancellation? Depending on the exact circumstances of the cancellation, you might be entitled to a full monetary refund and/or flight compensation.

First, let’s talk about the EasyJet refund. You are entitled to it if your EasyJet flight was cancelled and you did not take an alternative flight offered by the airline. In some cases, EasyJet might not offer an alternative flight at all — in these circumstances, your eligibility for an EasyJet refund is pretty much guaranteed.

Remember that you are entitled to a monetary refund — so don’t accept vouchers!

Besides EasyJet refund, in some circumstances, you might be also entitled to EasyJet compensation of up to £520. This applies if your flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days before the planned departure date and if some additional criteria were met. We look into all these criteria in the table below.

When can EasyJet deny my compensation and refund claim?

There are a few situations in which the airline can deny your claim, as the delay or cancellation happened because of a third party’s fault. We call these situations extraordinary circumstances.

  • Bad weather, for example thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.

  • A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry.

HOWEVER! A strike of a specific airline/their crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!

  • Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.

  • Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.

  • A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.

  • An unruly or ill passenger.

  • Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.

However, you should be aware that airlines sometimes use extraordinary circumstances as an excuse to deny even the rightful claims. That’s why we always recommend you double-check whether you are entitled to EasyJet compensation or a refund. You can do it using our free, no-obligation Claim Calculator.

I had a flight to a non-EU country. Am I still entitled to EasyJet compensation and refund?

Yes. As EasyJet is a British airline, you are entitled to compensation and refund whether you are flying with them to the UK, Europe, or a holiday destination like Tunisia or Morocco.

However, it’s worth noting that different rules apply to flights handled by non-British/non-EU airlines. See the table below for details.

How long do I have to submit my claim for EasyJet compensation and refund?

If you were are flying to or from the UK, you have 6 years to claim your EasyJet refund and compensation. The only exemption is Scottland — if you were flying to or from a Scottish airport, you have 5 years to submit your claim.

If your itinerary did not include the United Kingdom, you have to take into consideration the law in the country you were flying from, the law in the country you were flying to, and the law in the country where the airline is headquartered.*

*While EasyJet is generally considered a British airline, many of its European flights are handled by the EasyJet Europe subsidiary. EasyJet Europe is headquartered in Austria where passengers have 3 years to claim compensation and refund.
