The story behind ITA Airways — the successor to Alitalia
Alitalia, the national Italian airline and the go-to choice of popes, ceased its operations in October 2021. After years of financial problems, the Italian government decided to shut the company down and — with an agreement from the EU — open a new, debt-free airline.
ITA (Italia Trasporto Aereo) officially commenced operations on the 15th of October 2021. The new Italian airline is significantly downsized compared to Alitalia. The airline currently operates only part of the routes previously operated by Alitalia, has 52 jets (less than half of Alitalia's fleet) and hires 2,800 employees (about a fourth of Alitalia's workforce).
However, the management of ITA Airways already has plans to expand the airline’s operations. New routes are planned for early spring 2022, including two new destinations in the United States (Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.).
Interestingly, despite the fact that ITA has purchased rights to the Alitalia brand for €90 million, the new airline will not be adopting its’ predecessors’ name. The name has most likely been purchased only to prevent competitors from acquiring it.

European air passenger rights — protection in case of a delayed or cancelled ITA Airways flight
European Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004 protects passengers in the event of a cancelled or significantly delayed flight.
-
If your ITA Airways flight is cancelled and you are not taking an alternative flight, you are entitled to a refund. Additionally, if your ITA flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days prior to departure, you might be also entitled to compensation.
-
If your ITA Airways flight is delayed by at least 3 hours, you are entitled to compensation of up to £520.
Although the United Kingdom is no longer a member of the European Union, the regulation has been adopted into British law after Brexit as 'The Air Passenger Rights and Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019’. This means British passengers retain the air passenger rights they enjoyed while being part of the EU.

Delayed ITA Airways flight — get compensation
Was your ITA Airways flight delayed? If you arrived at your destination at least 3 hours later than planned, you are entitled to compensation. The exact value of this compensation depends on the distance of your flight.
-
For flights of fewer than 1,500 km, the compensation is £220.
-
For flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, the compensation is £350.
-
For flights over 3,500 km, the general compensation is £520 — however, if your flight has been delayed by fewer than 4 hours, the total amount can be reduced by 50%.
Cancelled ITA Airways flight — get refund and compensation
Was your ITA flight cancelled? You might be entitled to both a refund of the money you paid for the ticket and compensation for how the cancellation disrupted your travel plans.
First, let’s talk about the ITA Airways refund. You can get it in virtually every case when your flight is cancelled and you are not taking an alternative flight. Whether the airline offered you an alternative flight or not, as long as you don’t finally fly to your destination, you are entitled to a refund.
Additionally, you might be entitled to cancelled ITA flight compensation. Compensation is awarded if your ITA flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days before the departure date. However, as shown in the table below, some additional criteria also apply.

Rules regarding compensation and refunds for non-EU ITA Airways flights
If you were flying with ITA Airways to a non-EU country, such as the United States, no need to worry — you are also protected in the event of a cancelled or delayed ITA flight.
As ITA Airways is an airline headquartered in Europe, the European regulations apply to all of its flights, including inbound and outbound flights to non-EU destinations.
However, if you are flying to a non-EU destination with a non-British/non-European airline, the European regulations cover only your flights from UK/Europe. See the table below for more info.
Can ITA Airways deny my ITA refund or compensation claim?
Unfortunately, still too often passengers are denied compensation and refunds. You should be aware, however, that there are only a few exceptional cases in which the airline can rightfully deny your claim. We call these extraordinary circumstances.
-
Bad weather, for example thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
-
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry.
HOWEVER! A strike of a specific airline/their crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
-
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
-
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
-
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
-
An unruly or ill passenger.
-
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
