How much Air Canada compensation can I get for a delayed or cancelled flight?

If your Nouvelair flight from the UK/EU was delayed or cancelled, the airline may be obligated to compensate you. The amount of compensation is determined by the length of your flight:

  • For flights shorter than 1,500 km, the compensation is £220.

  • For flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, the compensation is £350.

  • For flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU, the compensation is also £350.

  • For flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU, the compensation is £520 —but if your flight was delayed by fewer than 4 hours, the total amount might be reduced by 50%.

When flying to Europe or the UK with Air Canada, chances are high that your flight distance is over 3,500km. Therefore, when an Air Canada flight gets delayed or cancelled, passengers claiming with Flight-Delayed.co.uk usually get flight compensation of £520.

Can I get flight compensation for an Air Canada flight to the UK/EU?

Yes, however, in such circumstances, Canadian laws will apply, instead of the European ones. You can learn more about the Canadian regulations on the official website of the Canadian Transportation Agency.

Extraordinary circumstances — can Air Canada deny me compensation?

As mentioned earlier, the airline needs to be the party at fault for you to claim flight compensation. When a third party or force majeure causes a delay or cancellation, Air Canada has the right to refuse compensation. Those situations are referred to as extraordinary circumstances.

Some of the most common extraordinary circumstances are:

  • Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.

  • A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).

However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!

  • Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.

  • Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.

  • A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.

  • An ill or unruly passenger.

  • Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.

Airlines can claim that extraordinary circumstances occurred, even if that was not the case. They do so in order to avoid paying out compensation.
