2019 Eurowings strike compensation

In November 2019, a general strike of the Lufthansa cabin crew halted the airline’s operations. The strike lasted 48 hours, leading to approximately 1,300 flights getting cancelled

As Eurowings is part of the Lufthansa Group, the Eurowings crew also joined the strike.

A large number of passengers requested compensation for their cancelled flights. In the beginning, most of these claims were denied by the airlines.

However, since then European courts have looked into a number of cases related to the 2019 Lufthansa and Eurowings strike, ruling in favour of the passengers. For example, the October 2021 ruling of the European Court of Justice confirmed that air passengers are entitled to compensation when a cabin crew strike occurs — and that any potentially exceptional cases should be reviewed on an individual basis.

Unfortunately, regardless of the recent rulings, airlines are still too often ignoring passenger rights and denying their claims. That’s where Flight-Delayed.co.uk comes in — we have over 10 years of experience fighting airlines in courts, legal teams in 9 countries, and 98% of court cases won.

We will fight for your rights until the very end.

2021 Eurowings strike compensation

In October 2021, a possibility of another general Eurowings strike emerged, which could potentially lead to hundreds (or even thousands) of cancelled flights. The union Verdi, representing Eurowings cabin crew, requested additional benefits for the airline’s employees but so far the negotiations have not been fruitful.

A few Eurowings flights have already been cancelled in October due to warning strikes — if yours was one of them, keep in mind that you are eligible for cancelled flight compensation. The same applies if a 2021 Eurowings general strike happens.

Eurowings flight cancelled due to strike — what are my rights?

European and British regulations guarantee compensation in the case of a flight cancelled due to a strike of the airline’s employees, including pilot strike and cabin crew strike.

Please keep in mind, however, that the compensation will most likely not be applicable if the cancellation was caused by a strike of the airport’s employees or another strike not directly caused by the airline’s actions.

How much compensation can I get for a Eurowings flight cancelled due to a strike?

The compensation amount depends on the distance between the airport you are flying from and the one you are flying to.

  • For all flights of 1,500 kilometres or less, the compensation is £220.
  • For all intra-community flights (flights between two EU airports) of over 1,500 kilometres, the compensation is £350.
  • For all non-intra-community flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres, the compensation is £350.
  • For all non-intra-community flights of over 3,500 kilometres, the compensation is £520.

I have been offered an alternative flight — am I still eligible for compensation?

Yes, but the alternative flight must meet specific criteria. See the table below for more details.

What is the difference between a refund and compensation?

A refund means getting back the money you have paid for the flight originally. In most cases, you are entitled only to a refund if your flight was cancelled more than 14 days before departure.

On the other hand, compensation is awarded if the cancellation happened fewer than 14 days before departure — as this can significantly impact your schedule.

If your Eurowings flight has been cancelled due to strike and you have not been offered an alternative flight — or the alternative flight doesn’t fit your schedule and you don’t want to take it — you are entitled to both a refund and compensation.

How much time do I have to submit my flight compensation claim?

This depends on your point of departure and point of arrival, as the local laws differ.

For example, if you are flying with Eurowings from France to the UK, three laws apply:

  1. German law, as Eurowings is a German airline — up to 3 years to submit a claim.
  2. French law, as France is the point of departure — up to 5 years to submit a claim.
  3. British law, as the UK is the point of arrival — up to 6 years to submit a claim.

When submitting a claim, the most favourable law can be chosen. We recommend using our Claim Calculator — it will automatically pick the best option applicable to your case.
