Extended strikes in France announced for the first week of June

The mobilization against the proposed labour law in France continues. "We call for a general strike all throughout France.", announced Philippe Martinez, general secretary of the CGT union last Tuesday. For air transportation more specifically, union representatives are calling for strikes from the 3rd to 5th June (end of this week).

Since these strikes were announced beforehand, the airlines can adjust their schedules accordingly to keep the impact as low as possible. Nevertheless, flight cancellations for the whole country are to be expected.

Strikes – what are your rights as a passenger?

Every year numerous flights are cancelled and delayed due to strikes. But what are the passengers’ rights in such cases? Unfortunately, the official passenger rights do not always apply in these situations. This is due to the fact that most strikes are held by airport and ground staff, not by the airline staff. As this is third party personnel, the airline cannot be held accountable. Therefore, the flight irregularity falls under the category of ”extraordinary circumstances", which means that the airline is not liable and passengers have no right to compensation.

Flight delayed – What is the general compensation amount?

On the other hand, in the case of a strike held by airline personnel, the passenger does have the right to full compensation, according to European law. This compensation is structured as follows:

250 Euros for all flights of 1,500 km or less;

400 Euros for all intra-Community flights of more than 1,500 km and for all other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km

600 Euros for all other flights

Was your flight delayed or cancelled due to a strike? It is always worthwhile to check your right to compesation.

Written by: Team flight-delayed.co.uk
