After months of discussion between SAS and their pilot unions, an agreement couldn't be reached on better wages and work conditions. Pilots are now threatening to strike which will impact a good majority of SAS flights and cause lots of flight cancellations.

Why are SAS pilots striking?

Multiple aviation unions are currently striking across Europe. This includes cabin crews of Ryanair, easyJet, and more. Their main goal is to secure higher wages and better working conditions.

For SAS pilots, however, there is another important factor behind the strike. SAS has recently decided to establish two new subsidiaries, Connect and Link. Via these two subsidiaries, the airline is now hiring new pilots, instead of rehiring the pilots that were previously laid off during the pandemic.

According to Reuters, almost half of SAS pilots lost their jobs during the pandemic.

The impact of SAS pilots striking on the summer flights

More than 1,000 SAS pilots are planning to go on a strike, leading to the cancellation of around 50% of SAS flights. This means that around 30,000 passengers per day would be affected.
