This year we will start our travel tip series off with a list of the best festivals in Europe. Because what is more quintessentially summer than a festival?

No. 1 Sziget Festival - Hungary

This festival is one of the largest multicultural events in Europe. Sziget has been around since 1993 and will celebrate its 22nd birthday this year. The festival's location is quite a special one: on an island in the middle of the river Danube. For one week, people from all around the world party hard at this festival, which is frequented by approximately 400,000 visitors annually. This year, a 1000 acts are scheduled to perform on 50 different stages. This will include major artists like Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Skrillex and Calvin Harris.

No. 2 Tomorrowland - Belgium

Tomorrowland is one of the most famous and popular dance festivals in the world. This year, Tomorrowland will offer two weekends in July with a line-up that consists of top DJs and artists. This festival had its first edition in 2005, which means this year will mark the festival's 10-year anniversary. Famous artists playing this year are Armin van Buuren, Benny Benassi, and Steve Aoki, among many others.

No. 3 Pinkpop - Netherlands

Pinkpop should not be left out of our top five, as this is the best and most colourful festival in the Netherlands! Pinkpop became particularly popular in the 90's due to its amazing line-up and joyous atmosphere. The three-day festival draws around 100,000 visitors from around the world each year. The international acts performing this year will include the Rolling Stones, John Mayer and the Arctic Monkeys. For the full line-up check out the website below.

No. 4: Melt! – Germany

This German festival connects indie rock with electronic beats. The Melt! festival consists of a mix of live performances and DJs, pop, rock and electronic artists. The festival takes place in a special location in Germany: an open-air museum of 20th-Century machines, sorrounded by a beautiful lake. Melt! festival has been around since 1997 and will have its eighth edition this year.

No. 5: Glastonbury Festival – England

The Glastonbury Festival is the largest outdoor festival in the world. The fact that tickets sell out quickly each year is a true sign of its massive popularity. The artists who will be performing this year include Ed Sheeran, Rudimental and Skrillex. More than 2000 acts are expected to perform on 60 different stages, including music, but also cabaret, theatre, circus, poetry and much, much more!
