July 3–4 French ATC strike: your passenger rights explained

Friday, June 27, 2025

Is your flight affected by the air traffic controllers' strike on July 3 and 4, 2025? With the second-largest union in the sector (Unsa-Icna) calling a walkout just before the start of summer holidays, thousands of travelers are at risk of disruptions. If you're one of them, here’s what you need to know to protect your rights.

Flight cancellations expected during peak travel days

A major disruption looms over French airspace as air traffic controllers plan a 48-hour strike on Thursday, July 3, and Friday, July 4, 2025, just ahead of the summer vacation rush. The strike has been called by Unsa-Icna, the second-largest union representing air traffic controllers, citing “toxic management” as the reason behind the action.

Air traffic is expected to be saturated, with double or even triple the usual flight volume just hours before the end of the school year. Despite minimum service requirements, up to 20% of flights could be canceled, affecting potentially tens of thousands of passengers.

What are your rights if your flight is canceled or delayed due to the French ATC strike on July 3-4?

Under EU Regulation EC 261/2004, passengers affected by flight disruptions caused by airport staff or air traffic controller strikes are not automatically entitled to financial compensation, as these are considered “extraordinary circumstances.” However, airlines still owe you:

  • A full refund of your ticket if your flight is canceled and no suitable alternative is offered.
  • A full refund of your ticket if your flight is canceled and you decide not to accept the alternative offered.
  • A re-routing option at the earliest opportunity, or at a later date that suits you.
  • Care and assistance during the wait: meals, refreshments, hotel accommodation (if overnight), and transport between airport and hotel.

Important: Keep all receipts for extra expenses (hotels, meals, transport). Airlines must reimburse these costs.
