Naples airport closure

Naples Airport closed in November 2026: flying from Salerno Airport instead

Monday, November 2, 2026

Naples Capodichino Airport will be closed from 1 to 30 November 2026 for runway resurfacing. About a third of its flights are moving to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport, around 60–70 km to the south-east. The remaining flights have been moved to Rome or cancelled.

The travellers most likely to be caught out are those already in Italy: if you flew to Naples in October and your flight home is in November, it will not leave from Naples. Check the airport code on your booking now: NAP is Naples, QSR is Salerno. At the same time, if you have a trip planned to Naples in November, you will arrive at another airport.

Key points

  • Naples Airport is closed from 1 to 30 November 2026 and may reopen a few days early.
  • Thirteen airlines are flying from Salerno instead; other flights have moved to Rome or been cancelled.
  • Allow much more time to reach the airport: Salerno is about an hour's drive from Naples.
  • If your flight is cancelled, you're entitled to a refund or a new flight. If your Salerno flight is delayed or cancelled at the last minute, you may be owed up to €600 in compensation.

Why Naples Airport is closing

GESAC, the company that runs both Naples and Salerno airports, is rebuilding the runway and taxiways in a project worth €30 million. Work runs around the clock and is expected to take 24 days, with six extra days allowed for bad weather. If the weather holds, the airport may reopen before 30 November.

Flying home from Naples in November? Read this first

If you arrived in Naples before 1 November, your outbound flight was unaffected, but your return flight probably wasn't. Before you plan your last days:

  • Check your return flight now, even if you booked it together with your outbound flight. Look for the airport code (QSR for Salerno, FCO or CIA for Rome) and any new departure time.
  • Look for emails from your airline, including in your spam folder. Changes are usually sent by email or text message.
  • Plan the journey to the airport in advance. Salerno and Rome are both much further away than Naples Airport.

How to get to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport from Naples, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast

Salerno Airport is in Pontecagnano Faiano, about 20 km from the city of Salerno. The easiest route for most travellers is to get to Salerno railway station first, then take a bus to the airport: the Salerno Airlink express bus or bus line 8. For November, GESAC and Busitalia Campania are also running a direct bus between Naples (Via Galileo Ferraris, by Piazza Garibaldi) and the airport, with eight trips a day in each direction at €12 per trip. There are also more frequent shuttles from Salerno station to the airport and, as a trial, a fixed-fare shared taxi to Napoli Centrale and Salerno stations.

Starting fromBest optionApproximate travel time to the airport
Naples city centreDirect bus from Piazza Garibaldi; or train from Napoli Centrale to Salerno, then bus1.5–2 hours
SorrentoCar or private transfer; or train to Naples, then on to Salerno1.5–3 hours
Amalfi CoastCar, taxi or bus to Salerno, then bus1–2 hours
PompeiiTrain to Salerno, then busAbout 1 hour

These times don't include waiting. Allow plenty of extra time in November: roads and trains will be busier than usual.

Which terminal? Salerno will use two terminals in November. Flights to Dubai, Casablanca and Sharm el-Sheikh (outside the Schengen area) and to Madrid leave from the General Aviation Terminal; all other flights leave from the Commercial Terminal. The two terminals are about 1.3 km apart and linked by a free shuttle bus.

Flight moved to Rome?

Some airlines have moved their Naples flights to Rome instead of Salerno. ITA Airways is running a bus transfer between Rome and Naples for its passengers; for other airlines, check whether a transfer is offered. Travelling on your own, high-speed trains run frequently between Napoli Centrale and Roma Termini, and Rome Fiumicino is a further train ride from there. Allow at least half a day for the whole journey, taking into account waiting for connecting trains and possible delays.

Your rights if your flight was changed or cancelled

Being affected by the closure doesn't automatically mean you can claim. Your rights depend on a few conditions:

  • First, your flight must be covered by EU Regulation 261/2004. This is only a starting point: being covered doesn't mean you're owed compensation, just that the rules below can apply. Covered flights include all departures from Naples, Salerno or Rome, whatever the airline, and all flights arriving in Italy from another EU airport. Flights arriving in Italy from outside the EU are covered only if the airline is EU-based. For example, a flight from Salerno to Dubai with flydubai is covered; the return flight with the same airline is not.
  • A refund or a new flight is due whenever a covered flight is cancelled, even if you were told months in advance.
  • Compensation is only due in specific cases: if you were told about a change at short notice, or if your flight is delayed or cancelled on the day for reasons within the airline's control.

If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you the choice of a full refund within seven days or a new flight to your destination.

If your flight now leaves from Salerno instead of Naples and that doesn't work for you, contact the airline: many offer a free change or a refund when they move your departure airport, so check their conditions.

If you're flying to Salerno instead of Naples, the airline must pay for your transfer to Naples Airport or to another nearby destination you agree on. Keep your train, bus or taxi receipts.

Compensation of €250 to €600, depending on distance, is generally only due if you were told about the change less than 14 days before departure.

Many airlines notified passengers months ago, but schedules are still changing. If you're told about a change less than two weeks before your flight, you may be entitled to compensation.

Not sure where you stand? Flight Delayed can check it for you. Enter your flight details in our free compensation calculator and you'll know in a few minutes whether your changed, delayed or cancelled flight qualifies. If it does, our team handles the claim with the airline on your behalf, so you don't have to deal with it yourself. You only pay if we win the case and checking is free.

Delays and cancellations at Salerno: when you can claim

For a month, Salerno, a small airport that only reopened to scheduled flights about two years ago, will handle far more flights than usual, with aircraft and crews moved from Naples. If your flight to or from Salerno arrives more than three hours late, or is cancelled at short notice, you may be entitled to €250 to €600 in compensation.

Airlines can refuse to pay only for extraordinary circumstances outside their control, such as air traffic control restrictions or severe weather. Crew shortages, technical faults and poor planning usually don't count. A delay caused by an earlier flight counts against the airline only if the original problem was within its control. And with a closure announced more than a year in advance, problems caused by moving flights to Salerno are hard to call unforeseeable.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled:

  1. Keep your boarding pass and all messages from the airline.
  2. Ask the airline staff for the reason for the delay, in writing if possible.
  3. Keep receipts for any meals, transport or hotel you pay for.
  4. Check your claim as soon as possible: compensation claims have time limits.

Frequently asked questions

When does Naples Airport reopen? Naples Airport is due to reopen by 1 December 2026 at the latest, and possibly a few days earlier if the weather is good.

How do I know if my flight leaves from Salerno? Check the airport code on your booking or in your airline's app: NAP is Naples, QSR is Salerno.

How far is Salerno Airport from Naples? About 60–70 km. Allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours by public transport from central Naples, possibly more in case of delays.

Who pays for my transfer if I land in Salerno instead of Naples? The airline. Under EU rules, it must cover the cost of getting you to the airport you booked or to another nearby destination you agree on.

My flight home from Salerno was delayed. Can I claim? If you arrived more than three hours late because of a problem on the airline's side, you may be entitled to €250 to €600. The advance notice of the closure doesn't matter for delays on the day.
