Norwegian Air flight delayed, cancelled or overbooked? Here’s how to claim compensation

Is your flight with Norwegian Air delayed, cancelled or overbooked? Then your rights are protected under EU legislation, you can claim compensation for up to 600 euros (around £530 depending on the exchange rate). This page will help you understand your rights as a passenger, know the exceptions and, above all else, teach you how to receive the compensation you are entitled to as a passenger.

Norwegian Air flight delayed, cancelled or overbooked? Your passenger rights are covered

Norway is a member of the European Common Aviation Area; therefore, all passengers travelling with Norwegian airlines are granted rights by European legislation in case of flight disruptions. Regulation EC No 261/2004 outlines all passenger rights in the event of delayed and cancelled flights, there are specific conditions that need to be met for you to be able to claim compensation.

In most cases, you’ll be able to claim if you’ve arrived at your final destination with a delay of more than 3 hours (2 for cancellations). And, as established by the previously mentioned regulation, in the United Kingdom and Ireland you can claim your compensation up to 6 years after the date of the flight.

When can I claim compensation from Norwegian Air?

According to the regulation, a passenger is entitled to compensation if the flight disruption falls under the operational responsibility of Norwegian Air. However, in cases of ‘extraordinary circumstances,’ the airline is not considered responsible. Extraordinary circumstances may include:

  • Bad weather
  • A strike related to air traffic control
  • Political circumstances and unrest
  • Natural disasters: a volcanic eruption or a hurricane would qualify as an extraordinary circumstance for example
  • Bird strike; when there’s a collision between the aircraft and a bird or other foreign object
  • An unruly or ill passenger
  • Other options: delays caused by the airport staff (long queues during security checks) or something similar

If you wish to find out how this may affect your claim for compensation then please visit our page dedicated to extraordinary circumstances.

Conditions that must be met when claiming compensation for your Norwegian Air flight

In order for you to be able to claim compensation, you should make sure these factors apply to your flight disruption.

  • Route of the flight: The European regulation states that you can claim compensation when a flight is operated by a European airline (like Norwegian Airlines Shuttle) and if it takes off from and/or arrives at an airport in Europe
  • Circumstances: The regulations also state that, in order to claim compensation for a flight delay, cancellation or incident of denied boarding, the disruption must not have been a result of extraordinary circumstances
  • The deadline for claiming compensation: In the United Kingdom and Ireland, it is possible to claim compensation up to 6 years after the date of the flight. The timeframe varies depending on the European country
  • The total time of your delay: In most cases, you will be able to claim if you’ve arrived at your final destination with a delay greater than 3 hours. When it comes to cancellations, it's 2 hours

Other criteria may apply. If you want to know more about these conditions, don’t forget to read our dedicated pages about cancellations and delays.

Long delays, cancellations and overbookings: Norwegian must take care of its passengers

In case you are at the airport and are informed that your flight has been delayed, cancelled or overbooked, you have the right to receive care accordingly as well as certain services from the airline. These may include:

  • Meals and refreshments
  • Means of communication: emails, phone calls etc.
  • Hotel accommodation if needed

If you fail to receive this assistance and therefore incur in additional expenses, you may request to be reimbursed. However, it is important to keep the documentation of these expenses, only itemised receipts are accepted by the airlines.

How much can I claim in compensation for a Norwegian Air flight delay, cancellation or overbooking?

your flight disruption depends on the distance between your initial airport of departure and the one at your final destination. This means that connecting flights are covered.

If you are worried about whether you will be compensated for connecting flights, no need now to keep stressing out about it. Connecting flights are taken into account when assessing your situation. Essentially, your whole booking is covered under the regulation, if your flights are all part of one single booking. How much can one claim then? Here’s the answer:

Compensation amounts

  • For all flights covering a distance of up to 1,500 kilometres, you will receive around  £220
  • For all flights covering a distance between 1,500 kilometres and 3,500 kilometres, you will receive up to about £350
  • For flights covering a distance greater than 3,500 kilometres, you are entitled to up to around £530

Please remember that if your flight travelled a distance greater than 3,500 kilometres and it was delayed more than 3 hours but fewer than 4, then the total amount of compensation is reduced by 50%. The regulation defines the total amounts in euros and they are €250, €400 and €600.

What you need to do when claiming compensation for your delayed, cancelled or overbooked Norwegian Air

These are our most relevant recommendations when claiming for your Norwegian Air flight:

Keep a copy of your travel documents

  • Flight documents: boarding pass, booking confirmation etc.
  • Receipts for all other costs that incurred because of your flight disruption (taxi or other transport, hotel accommodation, food etc)

Keep track of the information about your disrupted flight

  • Flight number
  • The flight schedule (initial scheduled arrival and departure times)
  • Length of the delay (when you actually departed and arrived at your final destination)
  • Information regarding the flight that you’ve used to finally reach your final destination (replacement flight)

What was the reason for the flight’s delay or cancellation?

  • Find out from the Norwegian Air staff as to why your flight was delayed or cancelled
  • Check the weather report: your flight might be affected by an extraordinary circumstance.
  • Check if other flights are delayed or cancelled (at the airport of departure and arrival)

Claim your compensation from Norwegian Air Shuttle

Very often, airlines make the process of claiming as complicated as possible in order to simply avoid compensating their passengers. They also overuse the argument that disruptions were caused by extraordinary circumstances. Therefore, and more often than not, one sees passengers lose hope and accept the airline’s rejection as the truth.

Fortunately, we have the adequate tools and databases to ensure that your rights are enforced and to fact-check the airlines. We will even take them to court when necessary and all of the legal costs will be covered by our 25% win-fee. If you wish so, we can take care of everything and help you enforce your rights!

Claim my compensation

If you want to maximise the probability of being compensated for your Norwegian Air Shuttle flight delay, cancellation or overbooking, you can let a specialised service, like Flight-Delayed, take care of the whole ordeal. We will gladly help you get what is yours, all under our no-win no-fee agreement.

When do I qualify for compensation?

Regulation EC 261/2004 specifies that passengers may receive compensation if the delay, cancellation or denied boarding was caused by an incident under the responsibility of the airline. It means that the airline will have to pay compensation unless it can prove that the disruption was caused by an extraordinary circumstance. Examples of extraordinary circumstances include adverse weather conditions, natural disasters, political unrest, a threat to the safety of the flight or passengers, a passenger falling ill, etc.

However, please remember that an airline must prove not only that the disruption was caused by an extraordinary circumstance but it should also prove that the company has done everything they could in order to minimise the inconveniences. For example, disruption caused by an extraordinary circumstance to an early leg of an aircraft’s schedule may not be a strong enough argument against a flight cancelled or if it is delayed for more than 3 hours at the end of the schedule.

Have you already filed a claim with Norwegian Air but it was rejected? We can still help!

If you’re uncertain if your flight delay or cancellation qualifies for compensation, once you’ve submitted your claim our team of experts will assess the circumstances and your situation. If your claim has already been rejected by Norwegian, you can still submit your claim and our team will verify and corroborate the airline’s arguments. Very often, the carriers assess the situation wrongly and reject perfectly valid claims; so don’t give up that easily and don’t worry, we’re here to help you!

Norwegian Air Shuttle: facts, history and punctuality

Norwegian Air Shuttle

Norwegian Air Shuttle is the largest airline originally from Norway. Founded in 1993, the airline has built its long-haul network on a low-cost model which has however left the air carrier facing recent profit struggles. The fleet consists of 170 aircraft and is known for being one of the world’s youngest established airlines, as well as for striving to be friendly to the environment even though most flights operate long-haul distances.

During the last year, from June 2018 to May 2019 Norwegian Air Shuttle had an annual on-time performance of 75.9% with a number of about 127 thousand flights.

Very fast and professional, got my claim just over a month but then again the airline did tell us we can claim and gave us leaflets.

Really simple to use, and didn't take very long for my claim to be processed.

I wasn't very optimistic about using this service, but the from the outset the communication was excellent and the instructions were clear. The claim is all handled via email and the online service portal. The team are very quick to answer any questions you have while the airline is assessing your claim. In my case, I was awarded 225 Euros compensation, better than nothing and so glad I took the time and effort to get this money back! Thank you Flight-Delayed for your fantastic service.

Very good service claiming a compensate after a long delay from airline and we got the out compensate. Thank you very much ...

Successful claim against Jet 2 ! Took a while (4yrs) but glad to finally won !!

This company provide a very fast and efficient service with no fuss and they took a fair amount of commission with no extra hidden charges. Extremely pleased with them.

i have had great help with the flight delayed trip thankyou very much to u and team

Very good Service for claming Money from Airline companies if you had a Problem like more than 3hrs delay, cancellations without reason. For my case, Airline rejected my Claim via customer Service but after i used this site it took only 4 weeks from Claim to confirmation for compensation. it's very easy to fill out the form to Claim and they answer/help right away. you should try with this even though Airline already refused to pay you with several reason.

It's taken 12 months to extract compensation from Ryanair, purely down to the pathetic customer service on the part of the Irish Airline. Will never use them again as they use every tactic in the book not to pay out, and even though they have now settled conversation rate 1.40, as opposed to commercial rate of 1,31. Many thanks to Flight-Delayed for their excellent support. Well worth 25% cut to get justice done. Highly recommended.

Just over three hours delay last year to Crete contacted this company, they sorted the claim and with in a few weeks Monet transferred into my account. fantastic service. Thank you

Didn't expect result But cash son it's way to.me. Thank you. Great company

What an excellent service , after trying for almost a year to claim compensation for a 5 hour delay in which we were kept inside the cabin with nothing to eat or drink i contacted this company and within 6 weeks I have recieved full compensation minus their 25% which I am happy to pay as I had given up. thanks again to the staff for all your communication and work to complete this. cannot recommend you enough

Just got our cempensation thanks to the team at flight delay very easy process, kept informed as to how the claim was going

Very good service to use for claiming money from the airline companies due to a long delays or cancellations for no reason or no explanation! I had no idea it is even possible, but I filled their forms and did not need to pay a thing for it. They claimed 800 euros for 2 passengers and all they took was their commission fee from the claimed price for their work which is the way it should be. They managed to get the money within a month or so.

My plane was delayed for over seven hours on a UK flight from Newquay to Manchester. I contacted Flight Delay and they quickly completed my claim without any fuss. I have received £195.62 minus a 25% charge, I actually received £145.07. All this took approx 5 weeks from beginning of claim to having payment into bank. HIGHLY RECOMMEND and thank you flight-delayed

Ryanair left us delayed at Knock Airport for over 4 hours. Not just inconvenient but annoyingly cost us an extra £23 airport parking which we could not reclaim. Although not a "serial complainer", saw the Flight Delayed Website and thought "why not?". So glad I did. Efficient and professional organisation that made it an easy process resulting in €300 for us and €100 for them and a "heads up" for Ryanair. Perfect.

What a nice surprise, cheque for delayed flight dropped through the letterbox. Asked flight delayed to do the work for me and a few emails and a few months later I received the cheque for over £600. Minus their 25% which I do not begrudge as if they hadn't done the work for me I would never have got anything. Also thanks to Martin Lewis for making me aware I could claim. Thanks delayed flights I will certainly recommend you.

Very helpful, I got a lot back. I also hope anybody who ever got flight delayed, don't lose your right! It didn't take me a lot of effort to submit the materials, they can help you.

Great service, very easy process and friendly team to deal with - answered questions quickly and through the online tool I was able to track the progress of our claim. Everything has been handled really well and I would happily recommend the Flight-Delayed team to help you with your claim.

My plane was over three hours late getting back to Manchester due to delays. I contacted Flight Delay and they got me £199 (minus 25% for their fee) for the delay. It took less than an hours work from me to fill out a form and give them my power of attorney. Six weeks later it was all sorted. Highly recommended!
