In the future, the "Istanbul New Airport" is supposed to be the world's largest airport, with six start and runways. The architects of "Haptic Architects", "Nordic Office of Architecture" and "Grimshaw Architects" have recently released the first pictures of how the future airport could look like.

In 2018, the first phase of the project is to be completed. From this moment on, the airport is, according to its constructers, already, able to manage up to 90 million passengers per year. After its completion and together with the already existing airports of Istanbul, the future airport will then carry, another 150 million passengers per year. Currently, the U.S. Hartsfield -Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the largest airport in the world with over 94 million passengers in 2013. At number two in 2013, the Beijing airport with almost 84 million passengers London - Heathrow: Third place and Tokyo -Haneda in fourth place. The current Istanbul airport was in 2013 on the eighteenth place. Schiphol (NL) is in fourteenth place.
