Only the Concorde did better: A British Airways Boeing 777 connected New York to London in 5 hours & 16 minutes almost breaking the record.
The British Airways flight BA114 took off from New York JFK on 7th, January 2014 at 8:50 PM, heading to London Heathrow with an unknown number of passengers on board. This flight route usually takes almost seven hours. However, a Jet stream twice as strong as usual, estimated at around 250 miles per hour, allowed the 777 to slide to a ground speed close to 745 mph. Transatlantic flights from West to East usually gain one hour compared to their estimated flight time because of this Jetstream. This phenomenon is particularly strong this year due to notable low temperatures in North America. However, this Jetstream forces flights heading the other way to use an air corridor a little further North in order to minimize delays.
The record time from New York to London is 2 hours and 52 minutes and was set on 7th, February 1996 by the British Airways Concorde.
