Sunny and beautiful beaches as well as very interesting landscapes: there are many reasons to spend your holiday in the Canary Islands. The report coming from Flight-Delayed.co.uk’s statistics adds one more to the list: almost nowhere else in  Spain is there a better on-time performance when arriving at the airport. Sunny days at the beach instead of waiting at the airport

In July, with the exception of Tenerife Sur airport, the on-time performance index for the Canary Islands’ airports was much higher than the Spanish national average of 63%. The index considers how many flights were delayed by at least 15 minutes based on their schedule, catalogues them as “delayed” and ponders the on-time performance score. Statistics show that in July, Tenerife Norte (88%), Gran Canaria (78%) and Lanzarote (77%) were the most punctual airports in Spain. For the big airports, like Barcelona - El Prat, it was much worse, with only one in two flights arriving on time!

As shown by the statistics of Flight-Delayed.co.uk, the tourists who visit the Canary Islands also arrive at their destination with much more punctuality than those who travel to the Balearic Islands. In both Mallorca and Ibiza, 44% of flights were delayed. However, this was due to the strike by Ryanair's cabin crew at the end of July and also to problems in Spanish air traffic control and several strikes by French air traffic controllers.

Compensation for flight delays

If you have experienced a flight delay during your vacation, or at any other time, there is a silver lining to such a stressful situation. In the case of a delay of at least 3 hours, also in the case of a flight cancellation, passengers are entitled to financial compensation, which is usually 400 euros for a flight to or from the Canary Islands.

According to European law, the airline will have to compensate its passengers unless it can prove that the delay was caused by an extraordinary circumstance. Such extraordinary circumstances include events such as a snowstorm, political problems, operational problems at the airport of departure or arrival, etc.

Was your flight delayed or cancelled while departing or arriving from the Canary Islands? Then you have the right to claim compensation for the disruption. If your delay or cancellation has not been caused by an extraordinary circumstance, you could be owed up to £350.00!
