Flybe has gone up for sale after a full year of red numbers

Friday, November 16, 2018

After a tough year and having just issued profit warnings, Flybe has announced that they have been in talks with potential buyers. What does this mean for the airline and its passengers?

Will my Flybe flight be cancelled?

After the strategic review, the board has confirmed that even though they have been considering cost-saving measures, already sold flights are not at any risk. If you have bought a ticket to fly with Flybe, you can breathe now. Your flight probably won’t be cancelled.

Flybe is up for sale but you can still claim your compensation

Why is Flybe in so much trouble?

The airline has quoted a weak pound, shrinking consumer demand and increasing fuel costs as the reasons why they have failed to turn a profit this year. However, several industry analysts point to the fact that the airline has indulged in some serious mismanagement since 2010. The fact that they received around £150 million from investors in 2014 and have little to show for it, remains as clear proof of the airline’s incapacity to find a winning and profitable strategy.

Who will buy Flybe and what will happen to its routes?

Until now, it is very uncertain. Allegedly, the airline has been in talks with IAG (owner group of British Airways, Vueling, Iberia and Aer Lingus) as well as with Stobart Group (owner of Southend Airport). With the objective of keeping operations going, Flybe has announced that it will be reducing its routes and flying fewer planes.

Will Flybe go bust any time soon?

It is very unclear right now. It may be probable if the airline does not find a path to profits soon, disregarding the ongoing negotiations. The survival of the brand assuredly rests on the profitability of its operations, even if the sale is successful and goes forward.

Can I still claim for a Flybe flight delay, cancellation or overbooking?

Yes you can. Filing a claim against FlyeBe on your own requires knowing your rights, being sure that the flight is eligible and back and forth communication with the airline.
