A 9-year old schoolgirl from Cwmbran, South Wales recently passed the Turkish customs – with a unicorn passport!
Emily Harris was travelling with her mother and father when she was asked at Antalya airport to show her travel documents. Her parents inadvertently handed Emily the wrong passport, leading their daughter to show the Turkish official a toy passport that Emily made herself for her stuffed unicorn, rather than her own. Upon reviewing the document, which contains a photo of the pink animal (called Lily), the customs officials stamped the 'Design a Bear' passport and simply waved Emily through.
Emily's mother Nicky commented on the incident: “I didn’t realise until I was putting the passports away. There was a moment of panic when I thought someone would come chasing after us, but nothing. The passport doesn’t even look real - it’s got gold teddy bears on the front!"
The family was later able to laugh at what happened. "But at the same time, it’s a worry to any parent, how easy it would be to smuggle a child through customs and into another country."
