What are my rights in the event of a delayed or cancelled Turkish Airlines flight?
If you have experienced flight cancellations or delays with Turkish Airlines, it's important to remember that British regulations safeguard your rights as an air passenger. In specific situations, according to both the British and EU laws, you may be eligible for compensation of up to £520 as well as a complete refund of the ticket cost of your cancelled Turkish Airlines flight.
- Was your Turkish Airlines flight delayed? If you arrived at your final destination at least 3 hours late and your flight departed from the EU/UK, you are most likely entitled to flight compensation.
- Was your Turkish Airlines flight cancelled? If you did not take an alternative flight offered by the airline or if the airline did not offer any alternative flights, you are entitled to a refund. Additionally, if the flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days before departure and was supposed to depart from the UK/EU, you might be entitled to cancelled flight compensation.
- Regardless of the flight disruption or its cause, airlines must provide passengers with special assistance, known as the "right to care.” This includes: food and beverage vouchers, communication services (e.g. free email, phone calls, or fax messages), and, if needed, accommodations and transportation. You can claim those directly at the airline’s service desk at the airport, if the airline refuses to give you a voucher, just go and buy what you need — they will have to pay you back those expenses (as long as they are reasonable).
Warning: If your flight was delayed or cancelled because of “extraordinary circumstances”, you won’t be entitled to flight compensation as the airline needs to be responsible for the flight disruption to provide compensation to passengers.

Can I get compensation if my disrupted Turkish Airlines flight departed from Turkey?
Yes, you can. However, in such a case, the separate Turkish regulations will apply, and not the EU261 or UK261 laws.
The Turkish Regulation on the Rights of Air Passengers, also known as SHY or SHY-PASSENGER, was issued by by the Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation back in 2011, and is in many points aligned with its EU equivalent.
In addition to international flights departing from and arriving in Turkey, the SHY-PASSENGER regulation covers also national flights between Turkish cities. In the event of a disruption of such a national flight, passengers can claim compensation of equivalent flights of 100 euro.

Am I still eligible for Turkish Airlines flight compensation if I’m flying to the UK or EU?
Following are the two circumstances under which you are eligible for flight compensation:
- The airline is headquartered in the UK or EU
- The airline is not headquartered in the UK or EU, but it took off from the UK or EU
Since Turkish Airlines is a non-EU airline, your rights to flight compensation are not covered by the British and EU legislations if you are flying to UK/EU. You need to be travelling from the UK/EU to be eligible for flight compensation.
See the table below for more details about when you can get flight compensation as a UK/EU air passenger.
Type of flight | Example | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Flying with a British carrier | Tokyo to London with British Airways | Yes |
Flying with a EU carrier | Amsterdam to London with KLM | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier from the UK | London to Tokyo with Japan Airlines | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier to the UK | Tokyo to London with Japan Airlines | No |
Extraordinary circumstances — can Turkish Airlines deny me compensation?
When the delay or cancellation was caused by a third party or force majeure, Turkish Airlines has the authority to decline compensation. Such situations are referred to as extraordinary circumstances.
Some of the most common extraordinary circumstances that allow Turkish Airlines to deny your claim are:
- Extreme weather conditions, such as thunderstorms and dense fog.
- A strike, specifically caused by the workers within the aviation industry not related to the airline (eg. baggage handlers). Keep in mind that a Turkish Airlines strike caused by workers associated with the airline is NOT considered extraordinary circumstances!
- Natural disasters, such as floods, wildfires, and hurricanes.
However, keep in mind that if your Turkish Airlines flight was not departing from the UK or the EU, you won’t be entitled to flight compensation under the British and European regulations. Also, airlines sometimes claim that an extraordinary circumstance happened, even if that was not the case. They do it to avoid paying out compensation.
