Your rights in the event of a delayed or cancelled Etihad Airways flight
If you have experienced flight cancellations or delays with Etihad, it's important to remember that British regulations safeguard your rights as an air passenger. In specific situations, according to the British and EU regulations, you may be eligible for compensation of up to €600 and a complete refund of the ticket cost for your cancelled Etihad Airways flight.
- Was your Etihad Airways flight delayed? If you arrived at your final destination at least 3 hours late and your flight departed from the EU/UK, you are most likely entitled to flight compensation.
- Was your Etihad Airways flight cancelled? If you did not take an alternative flight offered by the airline or were not offered any alternative flight, you are entitled to a refund. Additionally, if the flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days before departure and was supposed to depart from the UK/EU, you might be entitled to cancelled Etihad flight compensation.
- Regardless of the flight disruption or its cause, airlines must provide passengers with special assistance, known as the "right to care.” This includes: food and beverage vouchers, communication services (free phone calls, emails, or fax messages), and, if needed, accommodations and transportation. You can claim those directly at the airline’s service desk at the airport, if the airline refuses to give you a voucher, just go and buy what you need — they will have to pay you back those expenses (as long as they are reasonable).
Warning: If your flight was delayed or cancelled because of “extraordinary circumstance”, such as bad weather, you won’t be entitled to flight compensation as the airline needs to be responsible for the flight disruption to provide compensation to passengers.
Can I still claim compensation if my Etihad Airways flight departed from a non-EU country?
Your rights to flight compensation are only protected by the British and European regulations if the airline is headquartered in EU/UK or departed from EU/UK.
Because Etihad Airways is a non-EU airline, your delayed or cancelled flight must have departed from an airport in the UK or the EU in order for you to be eligible for Etihad flight compensation.
Check out the table below for more information:
Type of flight | Example | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Flying with a British carrier | Tokyo to London with British Airways | Yes |
Flying with a EU carrier | Amsterdam to London with KLM | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier from the UK | London to Tokyo with Japan Airlines | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier to the UK | Tokyo to London with Japan Airlines | No |

How much Etihad Airways compensation can I get for a delayed or cancelled flight?
The amount of compensation is determined by the distance of your flight:
Distance of your flight | Compensation according to UK261/EU261 |
---|---|
Flights shorter than 1,500 km | €250 per passenger |
Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km | €400 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres within the EU | €400 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU | €600 per passenger |

Extraordinary circumstances — can Etihad deny me compensation?
Etihad might deny compensation even though your flight was 3 hours delayed or cancelled fewer than 14 days before the departure. Airlines must be at fault for the delay or cancellation for you to be able to claim flight compensation. If a third party or a force majeure caused the delay, we are talking about extraordinary circumstances and the airline can deny your flight compensation claim.
Some of the most common extraordinary circumstances that allow Etihad to deny your claim are:
- Bad weather conditions (e.g. severe fog or thunderstorms)
- A strike caused by workers within the aviation industry (e.g. baggage handlers). It’s important to note that a Etihad strike caused by workers within the airline (e.g. pilots, flight attendants) is NOT considered an extraordinary circumstance.
- Political circumstances (e.g. terrorist attack)
- A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
- Natural disasters (e.g. wildfires, volcanic eruptions, or hurricanes)
Airlines sometimes claim that an extraordinary circumstance happened, even if that was not the case! They do it to avoid paying out compensation.
How long do I have to claim my Etihad flight compensation and refund?
The delay depends on three different laws:
- The law of the country of departure
- The law of the country of arrival
- The law of the country where the airline is headquartered
In general, if your flight was departing from the UK, you have 6 years to claim flight compensation and refund.
When flying from another country, different time limits may apply: let’s imagine you had an Etihad flight from Amsterdam to Abu Dhabi. In such an event, you will only be able to claim based on Dutch law which states that you have 2 years to claim flight compensation.
