How much WestJet compensation can I get for a delayed or cancelled flight?
The amount of compensation is calculated according to the distance of your flight:
Distance of your flight | Compensation according to UK261/EU261 |
---|---|
Flights shorter than 1,500 km | €250 per passenger |
Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km | €400 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres within the EU | €400 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU | €600 per passenger |

When flying from Europe or the UK with WestJet, chances are high that your flight distance is over 3,500km. Therefore, when a WestJet flight gets delayed or cancelled, passengers claiming with Flight Delayed are usually entitled to flight compensation of €600 as both the British and EU laws state.

Extraordinary circumstances — can WestJet deny me compensation?
If your WestJet flight was delayed or cancelled, WestJet needs to be the party at fault for you to be able to claim WestJet compensation. If the airline is not, extraordinary circumstances would apply and you might not be able to get flight compensation.
Some of the most common extraordinary circumstances are:
- Bad weather conditions, including heavy rain or dense fog.
- A strike, caused by workers within the aviation industry, such as baggage handlers. However, a WestJet strike caused by workers associated with the airline is NOT considered an extraordinary circumstance, and you can claim compensation.
- Natural disasters, including wildfires or hurricanes.
- A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
Airlines may make the allegation that extraordinary circumstances occurred even if they did not. They do this to avoid having to pay compensation. However, you can always contest the airline's claims!
