What do you do if your passport is lost?

Monday, July 28, 2025

Should I be worried if I lose my passport?

Unfortunately, yes. A passport is typically required for you to travel outside of your country. It’s a valid travel document used to identify yourself. Additionally, it contains personal information, including your full name, date and place of birth, passport number, and gender. It also sometimes includes biometric data, such as fingerprints. Losing a passport with such personal information means you are exposed to the risk of identity theft.

What is the procedure if you lose your passport?

First, report the lost passport by going to the local police station in the country you are travelling in or to your country’s embassy. It is important that the passport is reported lost as soon as possible so that it becomes invalid for travel and prevents any unauthorised travel using your passport.

Second, apply for a passport replacement at your country’s embassy by submitting the necessary documents, which are explained in detail below.

Third, check out your travel insurance. It’s worth checking the coverage provided by your travel insurance as it may include the cost of replacing passports.

What is the easiest way to replace a lost passport?

The easiest way to replace your lost passport is to apply online, which is possible in countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, and Ireland. However, in countries where an in-person application is necessary, such as the Netherlands, you must visit the embassy yourself to replace your passport.

How quickly can you get a replacement passport?

It usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks. If needed, you can also apply for an emergency passport, which is a temporary travel document that is issued within a few days after you apply. It is recommended to check out the government website of your country for more information.

What are the requirements for a lost passport?

In general, you need to bring the following to apply for a replacement passport:

  • Passport application form
  • A police report regarding your lost passport
  • Passport photos
  • Proof of identity, such as an ID card or other documents that prove your identity

However, it’s important to keep in mind that the exact requirement for a lost passport may differ depending on the embassy. So make sure to check with your country’s embassy beforehand. For instance, in countries like Austria, Belgium, Finland, and Spain, filing a police report regarding the lost passport is mandatory, while in many other countries, it’s not required but still strongly advised.
