Here is a breakdown of how many airports certain popular European destinations have, along with a couple of details about these airports.

How many airports are there in the Netherlands?

There are 16 airports in the Netherlands serving as international, domestic, and military airports. The biggest of these is Amsterdam-Schiphol airport, located just outside Amsterdam.

How many airports are in Amsterdam (NL)?

Amsterdam has one airport: Amsterdam Schiphol. It is located about 11km from the city centre and serves 104 airlines, flying to 97 countries. It flies to 332 direct destinations. It is the main hub for KLM, the Dutch flagship airline, part of the AirFrance-KLM group.

Although Schiphol is the only airport in Amsterdam, the Royal Schiphol group owns stakes in many other Dutch airports (e.g., Rotterdam airport, Eindhoven airport, Lelystad airport).

How many airports are in the UK?

The United Kingdom has close to 300 airports in the country. However, most of these are not commercial, and therefore cannot be accessed by the general public. There are around 40 commercial airports, of which some of the biggest in the world, namely London Heathrow (LHR). 

How many airports are in London?

London itself has 6 major airports: London Heathrow (LHR), London Stansted (STN), London Luton (LTN), London Gatwick (LGW), London City (LCY), and London Southend (SEN) airports.

London Heathrow is located in the west of the city and is by far the busiest and largest of the six airports. This airport serves over 89 airlines, flying to 84 countries. It flies to around 214 direct destinations. It is the main hub for British Airways, the flagship airline for the United Kingdom. It was the busiest airport in Europe in 2024, fifth busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic, and second busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic. 

London Stansted is the London airport located in the northeast of London. Stansted flies to over 180 destinations, serving 27 airlines (of which 8 are cargo), flying to around 39 countries. It is the biggest hub for Ryanair, making Stansted the airport offering the most European destinations from a UK airport. 

London Luton is the airport located in the north of the city. This airport flies to over 30 countries, serving 11 airlines (of which 1 is cargo). It flies to over 130 direct destinations, and is a major hub for low-cost European airlines, such as Easyjet, Ryanair, WizzAir, or Jet2. 

London Gatwick is the airport located in the south of London. Gatwick flies to over 220 direct destinations, serving over 50 airlines. Gatwick flies to around 90 countries. Gatwick is the largest operating base for EasyJet. Gatwick was the second busiest airport by passenger traffic in 2024 after Heathrow. 

London City is the airport located in the heart of the city. It is mainly a hub for business travellers, since the financial hub of London is located only 5km from the airport. In the winter months, it is increasingly used as it flies to many winter ski destinations such as Geneva or Zurich. The airport serves 8 airlines, flying to about 30 destinations, going to around 15 countries in Europe. 

Finally, London Southend, located in the east of London, is the smallest of the London airports. It flies to around 10 countries and 26 destinations. EasyJet is the only airline operating at Southend. They have discontinued other airline services in the past years. 

How many airports are in Manchester?

Manchester has one major international airport, although the airport’s group (Manchester Airports Group) operates three airports in total: Manchester Airport (MAN), London Stansted (STN), and East Midlands Airport (EMA).

Manchester Airport serves 49 airlines travelling to nearly 200 destinations in around 60 countries. It is the third biggest airport in the UK after London Heathrow and London Gatwick, and 13th globally for most destinations served. Its longest route is a direct flight from Manchester to Singapore, which takes around 13h10min. 

London Stansted is operated by the MAG group, but is located north-east of London, as mentioned in the previous section.

East Midlands Airport is an airport located near Nottingham and Leicester. It is home to 10 airlines, of which 5 are cargo. It is a big hub for cargo, as it is strategically located within the UK. It flies to around 65 destinations in 25 countries. It is technically, just like Stansted, not an airport in / around Manchester, but it is operated by the same group.

How many airports are in Malta?

Malta only has one airport that serves the island - Malta International Airport (MLA). This airport flies to 108 non-stop destinations across 36 countries. It hosts 33 different airlines. It is located in Luqa, situated around 5km from the capital, Valletta. It has a notable nonstop flight to New York’s JFK airport. 

How many airports are in Spain?

Spain has 124 airports, however similarly to the UK, not every airport is commercial. Spain has 49 commercially operated airports, of which the busiest are Madrid (MAD), Barcelona (BCN) and Palma de Mallorca (PMI).

How many airports are in Madrid?

There are 5 major airports in the greater Madrid area, of which only Madrid-Barajas is commercial. The other 4 airports are used for general aviation, or are used as military airbases. 

Madrid-Barajas International airport is the main airport serving Madrid and its immediate surroundings, 12km from the city-centre. This airport flies to over 200 destinations across 76 countries. It is home to 83 airlines, and it is the main hub for Iberia Airlines, flagship airline of Spain. 

How many airports are in Barcelona?

Barcelona has one main airport - Barcelona El-Prat Airport (BCN), but there are 2 others that are in the vicinity of Barcelona, usually used by low-cost carriers: Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO), and Reus Airport (REU).

Barcelona El-Prat (BCN) flies to around 220 destinations, in 65 countries. It hosts 87 different airlines. It is the second biggest airport in Spain, after Madrid, and is the principal gateway to Catalonia. It is a big hub for Vueling and LEVEL, and a key destination for easyJet, Ryanair, Air Europa and Iberia.

Girona-Costa Brava Airport is situated 74km north of Barcelona, but is marketed as a Barcelona airport, specifically for low-cost carriers. It hosts 10 airlines, flying to around 40 destinations in 17 countries.
Reus Airport is also an airport situated far from the centre of Barcelona (about 105km south of the city). It hosts 9 airlines, mostly low-cost. This airport offers flights to around 23 destinations in 8 countries. 

How many airports are in Tenerife?

Tenerife has two airports: one in the south and one in the north. The Tenerife North Airport (TFN) mostly serves flights within the Canary Islands, mainland Spain, and a couple of other European destinations. The Tenerife South Airport (TFS) handles most of the long-haul flights and big airline traffic. 

Tenerife North (TFN) offers flights from 8 airlines, flying to 33 destinations in 4 different countries. It mainly operates domestic flights to Spain and inter-island destinations (28 / 33 destinations), and 5 destinations abroad (e.g., London, Dusseldorf).

Tenerife South (TFS) is the bigger hub, offering flights with 40 airlines. It flies to approximately 120 destinations across 27 countries. It is the international hub of the island. It is the second busiest airport of the Canary Islands (after Gran Canaria Airport). Combined with the North airport, it becomes the busiest hub of the islands, surpassing Gran Canaria. 

How many airports are in Marbella?

Marbella itself does not have an airport. Most people, to access the city, land in either Malaga, or Gibraltar.

How many airports are in Portugal?

There are 46 registered airports in Portugal, including both civil and military airfields. However, it only has a few international hubs, both on the mainland and on its islands. The biggest hub (by far) is the capital’s airport: Lisbon Airport (LIS).

Porto has one main airport - Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO). It serves all domestic and international flights for the city with just one terminal. Porto offers non-stop flights to 128 non-stop destinations, in 31 different countries. This airport is a big hub for both Ryanair and EasyJet, both airlines offering the highest number of destinations out of the 47 airlines operating at the airport.

Turkiye has a total of 54 civil airports, and 37 of them are international airports. The busiest hubs are Istanbul and Antalya, both located in the west of the country, but at opposite poles. It is located between three continents (Europe, Asia, Africa), thereby making it easy to connect worldwide.
Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW) is Istanbul’s second airport, flies to 154 destinations in 52 countries. It hosts around 20 airlines. Sabiha Gökçen Airport is more prone to hosting low-cost carriers. It is the home hub for Pegasus Airlines. 

How many airports are in Italy?

Italy has a total of around 130 airports. However, this number includes small facilities. Furthermore, not every airport is used commercially or regularly. There are about 30-40 airports that function as main hubs in the country. 

How many airports are in Rome?

Rome has 2 main airports: Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO) which is the main hub for Rome, and Ciampino-G.B. Pastine International Airport (CIA) which serves mainly low-cost airlines flying to closer destinations. 

Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino (FCO) Airport is the bigger of the two airports, offering direct flights to 229 destinations across 78 countries. It hosts 94 different airlines. It is the main hub for ITA Airways, Italy’s flagship airline. This airport serves as the international hub for Rome, and is also Italy’s biggest airport, serving as a key hub for international travel. 

Ciampino-G.B. Pastine International Airport is the airport that focuses only on low-cost airlines such as WizzAir or Ryanair. It offers flights to 29 destinations in 14 countries on those two airlines. Although it is much smaller than FCO and has less amenities due to hosting less airlines, it is closer to the city-centre of Rome.

How many airports are in Milan?

Milan has 3 airports: Milan Malpensa (MXP), Milano Linate (LIN), and Milano Bergamo (BGY). Each of these airports have their own focus in terms of destination - Malpensa focuses on long-haul flights, Linate focuses on European or domestic flights, and Bergamo is a hub for low-cost airlines.

Milano Malpensa (MXP) is the biggest and best connected of the three Milan airports. It is the main hub for international and long-haul flights. Indeed, it flies to 206 non-stop destinations, across 81 countries. It hosts 90 different airlines. As previously mentioned, this airport serves as the international hub for Milan.

Milano Linate (LIN) is the airport with a stronger focus on European and domestic flights. The airport has flights to around 53 destinations in 15 countries. It hosts 19 airlines, of which easyJet and ITA have the biggest network. It is the closest airport to the city-centre. Although it is much smaller than Malpensa, it is one of the busiest airports in Italy. 

Milano Bergamo (BGY) is the airport with a focus on low-cost airlines. You can fly to 145 non-stop destinations across 39 countries, with 24 different airlines. Ryanair is the airline offering the most destinations among the 24 airlines. This airport is located well outside of Milan (around 55km), but serves as a good option for those travelling on low-budget airlines.

How many airports are in France?

It is hard to find a definitive number of total airports in France. Many sources say different things, of which certain say there are up to 500 airports in Metropolitan France. However, most of these are not commercial, and passengers are unlikely to encounter a majority of these. Overall, there are about 30 international and domestic airports in continental France. 

How many airports are in Paris?

There are 3 commercial airports in Paris: Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Paris Orly (ORY), and Paris Beauvais-Tillé (BVA). There is also a smaller private airport designated for private jets - Paris le Bourget (LBG).

Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) is arguably the biggest airport of Paris, serving as the main hub for international travel. It is the main hub for AirFrance, France’s flagship airline. Charles de Gaulle airport has 280 non-stop destinations, across 110 countries. It hosts around 105 airlines and is ranked as the 14th busiest airport in the world. It is the third busiest airport in Europe, after London Heathrow and Istanbul International.

Paris Orly (ORY) is the other Parisian airport situated near the city. It offers flights to 182 destinations in 55 countries, and serves 28 airlines. Orly serves as the homebase for Transavia France, and is also an international hub, albeit much smaller than CDG. Orly is the busiest airport in terms of domestic traffic. 

Paris Beauvais-Tillé (BVA) is the third airport considered to be part of Paris’s airport network. However, this airport is situated much further away from Paris (around 100km). This airport offers flights to around 80 destinations across 30 countries. It mainly operates with low-cost airlines, particularly Ryanair. It is the 10th busiest airport in France, gaining most of its traffic from low-cost airlines and charters.

How many airports are in Cyprus?

There are a total of 9 airports in Cyprus, however, 3 serve as the main hubs of travel on the island: Larnaca Airport (LCA) and Paphos Airport (PFO) located in the southern part of Cyprus, and Ercan (ECN) located in the north of Cyprus.

Larnaca Airport (LCA) has flights to 82 destinations spread across 38 countries. It caters to 46 different airlines. This airport has become the main hub for international travel on the whole island, attracting around 8 million visitors annually. It has become one of the busiest airports in the Middle East. 

Paphos Airport (PFO) is Southern Cyprus’s second big hub for travel. It offers around 55 nonstop destinations across 21 countries. It caters to 15 different airlines. This is a hub for low-cost airlines, specifically Ryanair and Jet2. This airport is mainly used for tourists who want to visit the western part of the country.

Ercan Airport (ECN) is the third main airport in Cyprus. This is the primary airport serving the state of Northern Cyprus (unrecognised by all states except Turkiye). This airport only has flights to and from Turkiye (11 destinations), available with 4 different airlines. It is a big hub for Pegasus Air. Due to the ongoing political situation, flights to other international destinations are banned from this airport.
