Ryanair in talks over codesharing on long-haul flights

Ryanair, famous for its low-cost model, is in it for the long run (pun intended). The irish budget airline is currently in talks with other carriers for a potential codeshare on long distance flights. So far Ryanair has begun negotiations with Aer Lingus and Virgin Atlantic as well as a number of other larger airlines.

What does this mean for travellers? A code sharing system would enable passengers to book their tickets for long distance destinations via the Ryanair website. Furthermore, passengers flying with Ryanair would be able to connect directly onto a long-haul flight without collecting their bags or going back through to check in.

This would be the first arrangement of its kind between a budget airline and long-haul carriers. Earlier this year, rival easyJet had dismissed this strategy deeming in unprofitable. On the other hand, a spokeswoman for Ryanair stated: “Given we have the largest route network in Europe, it’s a logical move and a very attractive proposition for long haul carriers.”
