Long distance ideas for Valentine’s Day
Friday, February 6, 2026
We understand that it can be hard celebrating Valentine’s Day when you are in a long distance relationship. However, we are here to give you a few tips and ideas to celebrate with your loved one, even if the physical distance between you is big. Hopefully, with these ideas, you will feel closer to your partner, and enjoy this day, even if you are apart.
Long Distance Dinner Date
Whether you are in the same timezone or not, it is always nice to enjoy a meal with your significant other.
Cook a meal together
If you enjoy cooking, or are up to a challenge, we suggest choosing a nice meal and cooking it together on FaceTime. Doing it at the same time virtually can make you feel like you are in the same kitchen, and both of you will end up enjoying the meal together!
Dessert is a staple of Valentine’s Day, so don’t skip this step! Although you will not be able to share the dessert, ordering one or making one together can also be a fun bonding moment, if you both enjoy baking.
Order a meal
Certain people do not enjoy cooking, and that’s fine too! There are solutions to this. To feel connected to your partner on a virtual dinner date, you could also order similar foods, and eat it together. This would make you feel like you are in a restaurant together, and although you can’t take a bite from each others’ food, it would still be a romantic tête-à-tête. In this case too, don’t pass up on dessert, it’s the cherry on top of a romantic dinner, and it applies to virtual dates too.
Spa day
A couple’s massage is a go-to Valentine’s treat for couples. Although a prerequisite for this is that you are together physically, it does not necessarily mean it is impossible to do when you are doing long-distance. There are two options here:
- Gifting your significant other a massage treatment or a spa day at an actual spa.
- Doing an at-home spa with the other person online.
Option 1 means that unfortunately, the other person will not be there with you, but you will surely be thinking about each other when doing the treatments, and know that it all comes from a place of love.
Option 2 could involve buying some face-masks, putting on a bubble bath, and enjoying each others’ company through the phone. It’s also a big bonus if you have fluffy robes you can curl up in at the end of your spa day.
Send them a care package
Celebrating Valentine’s Day is synonymous with celebrating your couple, and the fact that you love each other. If you are doing long-distance, what better way to express this than sending your partner a care package of the things they love?
This could include:
- Their favourite snacks (if you live in different countries, add some local snacks that they love),
- Something that represents your city (a magnet, or some sports memorabilia),
- Something with your scent on it
- Or just a collection of things that you enjoy when you’re together.
This is a nice reminder that you are there for them even when you are physically apart. Sending them little items that they love from your city, or just little things that you enjoy together will show them that you are thinking of them.
Make them a playlist
Making a collection of music for the person that you love has been a romantic gesture for decades now. From records, to mixtapes, to CDs. It is not easier than ever to do this with all the available music streaming platforms. Creating a playlist of music that you enjoy together, or music that reminds you of them is a great way for them to feel close to you. It is also a nice way to connect if you don’t have time to talk. As a bonus, this is not contained purely on Valentine’s Day, the playlist can be played for months and years after that. You can also keep adding music that represents your relationship the more you grow as a couple, turning it into a timeline of your relationship.
Plan a trip
Plan a surprise trip to see them
If your means allow, planning a surprise trip to go see your long-distance partner is always a perfect Valentine’s gift. If you can get their friends, colleagues, or family to help you with the surprise, it could make it all the more special.
If you do not have the time or capacity to plan a surprise trip for Valentine’s Day specifically, it could also be fun to surprise them with a trip, but booked at another time.
Plan a trip together
If they are not big fans of surprises, or you don’t enjoy planning trips by yourself, you could also make an activity out of planning a trip together. Hop on a call and you could brainstorm a trip together! With long distance, you may also be travelling to each others’ cities a lot, and this could liven things up by visiting somewhere new. It could be fun to discuss logistics, figure out what activities you would want to do on the trip, and it would give you something to look forward to. One of you could look into flights, whilst the other could look into hotels and activities. If you don’t want to go on a trip, or can’t due to your situations, planning a hypothetical trip could also just be a fun activity to do together.

Send them a scrapbook
Making a scrapbook and sending it to them can be a very fun way to express your love for your partner. It’s a creative and fun way to show how much you care about your partner, and it is a nice gift for them to look back on some great memories you’ve had together. You can print out some photos of the two of you, add in some tickets from concerts or events you’ve been to together (if you still have them), or other little things that remind you of them. You can also write some cute notes in the scrapbook, adding an even more personal touch to the gift.
Do a fun craft together
Our next suggestion is to do something creative or crafty together. It could be painting, drawing, knitting, crochet, or even a puzzle. Doing a creative activity should bring you together and it will give you a keepsake at the end of your call. If you are not DIY people, you could also order craft kits to your respective houses and do them together.
Another suggestion, albeit a bit more pricey, is to order custom scent gift experiences. These are gift sets that allow you to create your own unique scent at home, resulting in a personalised perfume. This could be a fun way of creating something unique to the both of you, and wearing your own signature scent.
Watch a movie together
A classic date is going to the cinema together. But with distance, it’s not entirely possible. However, you could still recreate the cinema experience together virtually. Just hop on a call, get similar snacks, and press play on a movie at the same time. This might even be better than the movies, since you don’t have to leave your bed, and you can talk to each other throughout!
Do a virtual tour of a museum
During the COVID period, certain museums developed virtual tours for those who felt like they needed an escape from home for a bit. These virtual tours included Paris’s Musée d’Orsay, London’s British Museum, or Washington D.C.’s National Gallery of Art. This could be a fun idea to feel like you are travelling together, whilst simultaneously discovering beautiful art.
Read a book together
If you are both bookworms, it could be nice for the both of you to indulge in your hobby together. Either you could both take turns reading a chapter of a book aloud to each other, and then discuss, or you could both read the book in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, and have a discussion about the book the day-of. Naturally, as Valentine’s Day is a romantic day, we suggest a romantic book. But it can be anything you feel like reading.
Buy a plant
Typically, people give flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day. However, these flowers tend to have a short lifespan. Why not spice up your gift-giving and buy a plant for your partner? This plant will live longer, and be a nice reminder for your partner when you are not there with them. If your significant other is not necessarily skilled with plants, you can always get them a cactus. They are very low maintenance and easy to take care of.
If you are not partial to cacti, these are other low-maintenance plants that you could get your partner:
- Aloe Vera
- Spider Plant
- Snake Plant
- Philodendron
- Succulents
- Cast Iron plant
- Dracaena
Other than being a more durable gift than flowers, it will also liven your house up. Win, win!
