Thomson cancels flights to Sharm el-Sheikh

Friday, November 27, 2015

The UK Holiday carrier, Thomson, has decided to extend its flight cancellations to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt until December 9. This is almost a week longer than the initial date set for the 3rd December.

Other airlines have followed in the same footsteps: Both easyJet and British airways have suspended all flights to the Egyptian holiday resort until well into January next year. Thomas Cook and Monarch airlines have grounded outbound flights until December 10 and 19 respectively.

This decision followed security concerns after a Russian holiday carrier was shot down in October killing more than 200 people. British prime minister David Cameron demanded flights to be suspended pending crisis talks over the current situation.

An easyJet spokesperson stated: “The situation is beyond our control and passenger safety will always be our number one priority”. All passengers booked for a holiday in Sharm el-Sheikh will receive a full refund or the opportunity to change destinations. Alternatives can be: The canary Islands, mainland Spain, Madeira or Cape Verde.

It remains to be seen whether flights will resume to normal.
