Jet2 has taken preventative action to stops its passengers being disruptive and abusive. The budget carrier has become the first in Europe to ban the sale of alcohol on early morning flights.

The news comes after several high-profile incidents involving drunken passengers that have resulted in flights being diverted and passengers being arrested.

The ban will come into effect on Monday and will apply to all of its bases. The low-cost airline is urging airports and retailers to follow suit.

Airlines have in particular been struggling with passengers drinking alcohol purchased before entering the plane, which is a criminal offence.

Jet2 are encouraging the industry to adopt the same policy as them, which sees all alcohol purchased before a flight placed in a sealed bag, preventing passengers illegally consuming alcohol during a flight.

The airline in the past has taken action against disruptive passengers by refusing travel to 500 and providing 60 of them with lifetime bans.

Managing director of Jet2.com, Phil Ward, said, “We believe that stopping sales of alcohol before 08:00BST on our morning flights is an effective way to ensure everyone has an enjoyable and comfortable journey. We understand that we're the first of the European airlines to take this bold step and call upon industry partners in airports to also trade responsibly."
