Black Lives Matter demonstrators close London City Airport

London: Flights to and from London City airport were disrupted after a protest took place on the runway.

Protesters from the Black Lives Matter UK movement breached the runway in the early hours of Tuesday morning before erecting a tripod and attaching themselves to one another.

Black Lives Matter UK later confirmed that they were responsible for the action. Nine protesters in total were removed by the Metropolitan Police.

The protest movement declared that they took the action in order to “highlight the UK’s environmental impact on the lives of black people locally and globally.”

Due to the extraordinary circumstances that have caused the travel disruption, passengers will not be able to claim for their cancellations and delays.

It has been reported that the minimal staff that are operating at the airport have been updating passengers and providing refreshments. Passengers that have suffered cancellations have been refunded for their flights.

It is being investigated by Scotland Yard as to how the members of the protest movement got onto the runway, with rumours they used a boat or swam to cross the Thames.
