Paris flights cancelled due to snowfall. Are passengers entitled to compensation?

Wednesday, December 14, 2022

In Northern France, the icy temperatures and winter weather have wreaked havoc. Road traffic has been particularly impacted by the weather, which has also resulted in numerous flight cancellations. 20–25% of flights at Charles De Gaulle and Orly airports in Paris have been cancelled in the morning of 14th of December 2022, and more are expected as the weather continues until the second half of the week.

The Paris Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly airports' runway access would "likely" be disrupted, according to a tweet from the Paris airport officials on Wednesday, December 14th.

On this day, roughly 25% of flights at Orly and another 20% at Charles de Gaulle would be cancelled, according to Transport Minister Clément Beaune.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) advised travellers to reschedule their travel plans if at all possible since it anticipated "severely disrupted aviation traffic for departures and arrivals at Paris airports."

Are passengers entitled to compensation?

Passengers might be wondering if they qualify for compensation due to the snowstorm and hazardous conditions. In these circumstances, passengers need to be informed about their rights.

Generally speaking, airlines are not obligated to compensate passengers for cancelled flights caused by adverse weather, including snowfall. This happens because extreme weather is seen as an "extraordinary circumstance," meaning that the airline cannot be blamed because they were not responsible for the disruption.

Passengers' rights in case of flight cancellations

However, when a flight is cancelled, passengers have a few rights. For instance, if a passenger was not given the option of taking an alternative flight or if they decided not to fly with the airline again, they are entitled to a refund.

In addition, if a flight is cancelled, passengers may be entitled to support from the airline, such as meals and accommodation.

In these situations, passengers should be aware of their rights. It is advised to contact a reputable company, like, if you are having trouble getting a refund from the airline. Our professionals can assist you in making a claim and therefore can manage the entire case on your behalf.
