EasyJet cancels hundreds of flights amid anticipated strike in Portugal

Tuesday, May 23, 2023

In response to a strike of easyJet’s Portugal cabin crew, easyJet has reportedly cancelled 384 flights. Passengers of these flights are entitled to compensation of up to £520 per passenger.

According to the latest reports, the strikes are scheduled to take place later this week for 26, 28 and 30 May, 1 and 3 June, and have been called by the National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel (SNPVAC) to address pressing labour issues. The union alleges that easyJet has been discriminating against its Portuguese workforce, leading to this significant action.

easyJet, known for its affordable and convenient flights across Europe, has a considerable customer base in Portugal, which will be severely affected by the strike. The flight cancellations are expected to disrupt the travel plans of thousands of passengers from all around Europe.

Negotiations and failed resolution

The SNPVAC has been involved in tense negotiations with easyJet for some time, with matters such as wage disputes and labour rights at the forefront. Unfortunately, despite attempts at resolution, the parties have failed to reach an agreement, leading to the decision of the SNPVAC to issue another strike notice after the previous strike in April.

easyJet’s response to the strike

easyJet, in an apparent bid to manage the impact of the upcoming strike, has proactively cancelled the flights, affecting both domestic and international routes. The airline says it is “extremely disappointed” with the SNPVAC’s call for the strike, claiming that the union’s proposal is impracticable considering that they pay their workers above the national wage average.

What does this mean for the affected passengers?

Due to the strike, many passengers remain stranded or have had their travel plans significantly affected. Passengers who have had their flights cancelled should be offered rebooking options or full monetary refunds by easyJet.

Additionally, passengers of these cancelled easyJet flights are also entitled to easyJet compensation of up to £520 per passenger.
