Norwegian flight delayed, cancelled or overbooked? Here’s how to claim compensation

Norway is a member of the European Common Aviation Area; therefore, all passengers travelling with Norwegian airlines are granted rights by European legislation in case of flight disruptions. Regulation EC No 261/2004 outlines all passenger rights in the event of delayed and cancelled flights, there are specific conditions that need to be met for you to be able to claim compensation.
In most cases, you’ll be able to claim if you’ve arrived at your final destination with a delay of more than 3 hours (2 for cancellations). And, as established by the previously mentioned regulation, in the United Kingdom and Ireland you can claim your compensation up to 6 years after the date of the flight.
When can I claim compensation from Norwegian Air?
According to the regulation, a passenger is entitled to compensation if the flight disruption falls under the operational responsibility of Norwegian Air. However, in cases of ‘extraordinary circumstances,’ the airline is not considered responsible. Extraordinary circumstances may include:
- Bad weather
- A strike related to air traffic control
- Political circumstances and unrest
- Natural disasters: a volcanic eruption or a hurricane would qualify as an extraordinary circumstance for example
- Bird strike; when there’s a collision between the aircraft and a bird or other foreign object
- An unruly or ill passenger
- Other options: delays caused by the airport staff (long queues during security checks) or something similar

Conditions that must be met when claiming compensation for your Norwegian Air flight
In order for you to be able to claim compensation, you should make sure these factors apply to your flight disruption.
- Route of the flight: The European regulation states that you can claim compensation when a flight is operated by a European airline (like Norwegian) and if it takes off from and/or arrives at an airport in Europe
- Circumstances: The regulations also state that, in order to claim compensation for a flight delay, cancellation or incident of denied boarding, the disruption must not have been a result of extraordinary circumstances
- The deadline for claiming compensation: In the United Kingdom and Ireland, it is possible to claim compensation up to 6 years after the date of the flight. The timeframe varies depending on the European country
- The total time of your delay: In most cases, you will be able to claim if you’ve arrived at your final destination with a delay greater than 3 hours. When it comes to cancellations, it's 2 hours
Long delays, cancellations and overbookings: Norwegian must take care of its passengers
In case you are at the airport and are informed that your flight has been delayed, cancelled or overbooked, you have the right to receive care accordingly as well as certain services from the airline. These may include:
- Meals and refreshments
- Means of communication: emails, phone calls etc.
- Hotel accommodation if needed
If you fail to receive this assistance and therefore incur in additional expenses, you may request to be reimbursed. However, it is important to keep the documentation of these expenses, only itemised receipts are accepted by the airlines.
How much can I claim in compensation for a Norwegian flight delay, cancellation or overbooking?
The total amount in compensation that you may receive is proportional to the distance between your initial airport of departure and the one at your final destination. This means that connecting flights are covered.
No need now to stress out about knowing if your whole booking is covered or not, the ECJ has made it very clear. Connecting flights are taken into account when assessing your case. Essentially, your whole booking is covered under the regulation if your flights are all part of one single booking. How much can one claim then? Here’s the answer:
- For all flights covering a distance of up to 1,500 kilometres, you will receive around £220
- For all flights covering a distance between 1,500 kilometres and 3,500 kilometres, you will receive up to about £350
- For flights covering a distance greater than 3,500 kilometres, you are entitled to up to around £530
Please remember that if your flight travelled a distance greater than 3,500 kilometres and it was delayed more than 3 hours but fewer than 4, then the total amount of compensation is reduced by 50%. The regulation defines the total amounts in euros and they are €250, €400 and €600.
What you need to do when claiming compensation for your delayed, cancelled or overbooked Norwegian Air

When do I qualify for compensation?
Regulation EC 261/2004 specifies that passengers may receive compensation if the delay, cancellation or denied boarding was caused by an incident under the responsibility of the airline. It means that the airline will have to pay compensation unless it can prove that the disruption was caused by an extraordinary circumstance. Examples of extraordinary circumstances include adverse weather conditions, natural disasters, political unrest, a threat to the safety of the flight or passengers, a passenger falling ill, etc.
However, please remember that an airline must prove not only that the disruption was caused by an extraordinary circumstance but it should also prove that the company has done everything they could in order to minimise the inconveniences. For example, disruption caused by an extraordinary circumstance to an early leg of an aircraft’s schedule may not be a strong enough argument against a flight cancelled or if it is delayed for more than 3 hours at the end of the schedule.
