How long after my flight can I claim compensation?


While the passenger rights regulation EC 261/2004 states how much compensation passengers are entitled to, the question of how long differs in each country. National regulations determine how many years after your disrupted flight you are still eligible for compensation. What doesn’t affect your compensation eligibility is the country in which you live. The regulations of the country in which the claim for compensation is filed is important. For example, if you want to claim compensation for a flight from December 2019, you can still do so until December 2025. Some of the statutes of limitations of some European countries:


  • 1 year: Belgium, Poland.
  • 2 years: Croatia, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and The Netherlands.
  • 3 years: Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Slovakia, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Norway, Portugal and Romania.
  • 5 years: France, Greece, Hungary, Spain and Scotland.
  • 6 years: Cyprus, Ireland and the UK.
  • 10 years: Luxembourg and Sweden


How much money can I claim in compensation for my disrupted flight?


Passengers have a right to financial compensation for the disruption to their booked flight. This can be as much as 600 euros per person! This right exists throughout Europe and is laid out in the EU Passenger Rights Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.

  • For all flights covering a distance of up to 1,500 kilometres, you will receive up to £232.00
  • For all flights covering a distance between 1,500 kilometres and 3,500 kilometres, you will receive up to £371.00
  • For flights covering a distance greater than 3,500 kilometres, you are entitled to up to £557.00


Please be advised that if your flight travelled a distance greater than 3,500 kilometres and it was delayed more than 3 hours but fewer than 4, then the amount of compensation is reduced by half. The total amounts are defined in euros in the regulation and are the following: €250, €400 and €600.

  • Two different occasions in which you are allowed to establish communication with an individual of your choice (calls, emails, etc.)
