Transavia strike: flight cancellations and delays at Paris Orly

A major disruption has hit Paris Orly Airport as Transavia France, the low-cost subsidiary of the Air France-KLM Group, faces an internal strike that has led to major flight cancellations and delays. The strike, which began on Friday, May 30, and ended on Sunday June 1st, was called by a minority union representing cabin crew members, but its impact was anything but minor.

The strike disrupted a large part of Transavia’s operations, throwing travel plans into chaos for thousands of passengers. Flights to popular summer destinations like Greece, Algeria, Portugal, and Tunisia, were either canceled or faced long delays, leaving many travelers stranded or scrambling to make expensive last-minute arrangements.

Why is Transavia on strike?

The Transavia France strike was launched by the cabin crew union UNSA-PNC over demands for better pay and improved working conditions. Key issues include higher compensation for night shifts, fairer bonuses for in-flight sales, and more balanced scheduling.

My flight was cancelled or delayed due to the Transavia strike: what are my rights?

If your Transavia flight was delayed or cancelled due to the strike, you are protected under EU Regulation EC 261/2004. While airlines are not required to compensate passengers for disruptions caused by extraordinary circumstances, like strikes by airport staff or air traffic controllers, this strike is internal to the airline, which means Transavia is fully responsible.

As a result, the airline is obligated to pay compensation of up to £520 per passenger if your flight arrived at your destination with a delay of 3 hours or more. You are also entitled to a full refund of your canceled flight if no alternative was offered, or if you refused the alternative provided.

If you booked an alternative route to reach your destination, Transavia must refund any fare difference, as well as cover expenses such as hotel accommodation, meals, and transport between the airport and your hotel. If you traveled by train or bus instead, those costs are also eligible for reimbursement.
