Completion Berlin Airport delayed again

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Berlin - The opening of Berlin's new airport was scheduled to take place on 30 October 2011, but is now being delayed for the third time. The  final completion of the airport, March 2013 is postponed also, and a new target date has not been set. When the first flight from this new airport will depart is unclear.Major mistakes in planning make the new airport a millstone around the neck of Germany's capital city. On top of the scheduling mistakes, the calculated costs have doubled from 1.5 billion GBP to around 3 billion GBP. The reason for the repeated delay of the completion has to do with problems with fire safety and the coordination of the activities of subcontractors.

About a quarter of a century after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the new airport is to arise in place of the old airport of West- and East Berlin, Tegel, and Schönefeld. The Berliner Abgeordnetenhaus, the parliament of the state of Berlin, is preparing a parliamentary poll for this airport debacle. Intended chairman Martin Delius says he 'no longer believes a single word' those responsible say.

Lufthansa, one of the main important airlines that will be operating from the new airport, demands a 'reliable planning' to be able to start doing test runs. In the meantime, Lufthansa will not be able to fly from the airport in Berlin.
