Ryanair may be taking legal action against Dutch public broadcast

KRO, the public broadcasting corporation that aired a programme titled 'Reporter' last month, may be facing legal action by Ryanair. Ryanair director Michael O'Leary announced that on Wednesday. In the programme, four Ryanair pilots unanimously commented on their employer's kerosine policy. According to the four men, Ryanair puts pressure on their pilots to fuel as little kerosine as possible in order to cut costs. They stated: “We hope it won't take a crash to wake them up. We are put under a lot of pressure to save money by fuelling as little as possible." The men also attested to feeling pressured by their employer to fly even if they are too sick to do so in a safe and responsible manner.

Ryanair now accuses the programme of being slanderous and unbalanced. According to O’Leary, Ryanair pilots are instructed to overfuel or refuel whenever necessary. He also stated no attempt was made by KRO to offer Ryanair a chance to respond to the allegations. The broadcasting corporation denies this, saying they ‘began requesting an interview as early as two weeks prior to the broadcasting date on December 28, but that those requests were ignored by Ryanair’.

According to KRO, it remains unclear whether Ryanair will go through with their intention of taking legal action against the broadcasting corporation for loss of reputation. ‘We will face any possible litigation with confidence’, a KRO representative stated.
