More than half the flights were cancelled at Brussel’s Zaventem airport this week, due to a strike by Belgian air traffic controllers. This was the reaction to a continuous dispute between the Belgian air traffic agency and union leaders, over the raise of retirement age from 55 to 58.

The international airline association, as well as many airlines, showed themselves outraged at this industrial action, especially after efforts had been made to restore things to normal after last month’s terrorist attacks. Budget airline Ryanair even threatened to sue for damages.

Approximately 200 out of 400 flights were cancelled on Wednesday. The outlook for Thursday remains uncertain.
