About Volotea

Volotea is a Spanish low-cost airline, established in 2011 by the founders of another Spanish airline — the largest one in the country — Vueling. Volotea flies between multiple EU countries, focusing especially on the Spanish, French, Italian, and Greek markets. Additionally, the airline also flies to a number of destinations in North Africa.

Currently, Volotea does not fly to the UK. However, the airline does fly from Cork to Verona.

Volotea delayed or cancelled flight — what are my passenger rights?

Wherever you are flying with Volotea, your air passenger rights are protected under the EU regulation 261/2004, often referred to as the EU261 or the Flight Compensation Regulation. This law guarantees that if your flight is significantly delayed or cancelled and the airline is at fault for the disruption, you can claim compensation and — in the case of cancellations — a flight refund as well.

What does EU261 exactly say?

  • Was your Volotea flight delayed by at least 3 hours? If the delay was the airline’s fault, you can claim up to £520 in Volotea flight compensation.

  • Did your Volotea flight get cancelled? If you did not take an alternative flight offered by the airline, you can claim a full monetary refund — don’t accept vouchers!

  • If Volotea announced the cancellation of your flight fewer than 14 days prior to the original departure date, you might be also entitled to flight compensation of up to £520.

Volotea delayed flight compensation — get up to £520

If your Volotea flight got significantly delayed, there is a high chance you can claim compensation of up to £520.

When can I claim compensation for a delayed Volotea flight?

You can claim Volotea compensation of up to £520 if:

  1. Your Volotea flight was delayed by at least 3 hours.

  2. The airline is the party at fault for the delay.
(You need to consider the so-called extraordinary circumstances, such as bad weather or political instability in the country. If these apply to your flight, you might be not eligible for compensation.)

How much compensation can I get for a delayed Volotea flight?

  • For all flights of fewer than 1,500 km, the compensation is £220.

  • For all flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, the compensation is £350.

  • For all flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU, the compensation is also £350.

  • For all flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU, the compensation is £520 — however, if your flight was delayed by fewer than 4 hours, the total amount might be reduced by 50%.

Cancelled Volotea flight — refund and compensation rules

Depending on the exact circumstances surrounding your flight cancellation, you might be entitled to cancelled flight compensation of up to £520 and/or a full monetary refund.

When can I claim a refund for my cancelled Volotea flight?

You can claim your Volotea refund if your flight was cancelled and you were not offered any alternative flight or you were offered one but decided not to take it.

Should I accept a travel voucher from Volotea instead of a refund?

We do not recommend it — and there are two reasons for that.

  1. If you accept a travel voucher, your money is frozen. You have to fly again with the same airline and the voucher expiry date is usually quite short.

  2. A voucher does not protect your money in the event of the airline’s bankruptcy — you simply lose your money.

=> Have you already accepted a voucher? You might be able to change it for a monetary refund.

When can I claim cancelled Volotea flight compensation?

In most cases, you can claim your cancelled flight compensation if your flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days prior to the initially planned departure date. However, some additional criteria apply in regards to the alternative flight that the airline might offer you — we explain it more in the table below.

When can I claim both a refund and compensation for my cancelled Volotea flight?

You can do so if your flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days prior to the original departure date and if you decided not to take any alternative flight offered by the airline.

To receive compensation, you also need to take into consideration additional criteria in regards to the alternative flight offered by the airline (see the table below) as well as extraordinary circumstances.

Extraordinary circumstances — can Volotea deny me compensation?

The so-called extraordinary circumstances are situations in which the flight gets cancelled or delayed not because of the airline but because of a third party or force majeure. The most common extraordinary circumstances are:

  • Bad weather, for example thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.

  • A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry.

HOWEVER! A strike of a specific airline/its crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!

  • Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.

  • Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.

  • A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.

  • An ill or unruly passenger.

  • Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.

You should be aware, however, that airlines sometimes use extraordinary circumstances as an excuse to reject even the claims that are valid. How long do I have to claim Volotea compensation and refund?

Generally, you may have up to 6 years to claim your flight compensation and refund.

To be more precise, this depends on:

  1. The law in the country you’re flying from

  2. The law in the country you’re flying to

  3. The law in the country where the airline is headquartered

The passenger can choose the most favourable law when claiming.

For example, if you are flying from France to Greece with Volotea (a Spanish airline), you have 5 years to claim as in all 3 countries the statute of limitations is 5 years.
